Over the past two decades, the Law Center has been privileged to honor incredible federal legislators with the Bruce F. Vento Award. Congresspeople like Rep. Elijah Cummings and Senator Cory Booker have been honored, but never before has a changemaker been honored twice - until now. This year, the Law Center is thrilled to honor Congresswoman Maxine Waters[[link removed]] for the second time, for her enduring fight for housing and racial justice.

Waters was first honored for her work in passing the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act of 2009, and her unwavering committment to ending homelessness has continued. Congresswoman Waters made history as the first woman and first African American Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, and has used her leadership position in Congress to bolster bold, meaningful change.

In addition to supporting eviction moratoria and necessary immediate legislation to protect renters and homeowners during the COVID-19 pandemic, she has used this moment to introduce permanent sweeping advancements in the fight to end homelessness. Congresswoman Waters introduced a groundbreaking housing package[[link removed]] to committee in July, and the Law Center is proud to have worked with her and other members of Congress to build a foundation to end homelessness for good.

The Law Center is proud to honor Congresswoman Maxine Waters for the second time with the Bruce F. Vento Award.
