Dear MoveOn member,
Bombshell revelations in Bob Woodward's latest book reveal that, in the days leading up to the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, a prominent Republican lawyer wrote up a six-point plan for how Mike Pence could block certification of President Biden’s election and keep Donald Trump in power.1
It's a blueprint for a coup d'état, authored by a respected member of the Republican legal establishment.
Thankfully, the plan did not succeed—this time—but it was discussed seriously at the highest levels of the White House. Had the election been closer, we might not have been so lucky, and we know Donald Trump is laying the groundwork to try again in 2024.
This is a battle for the very survival of American democracy, and it starts by preventing Republicans from winning control of Congress in the midterm elections.
That's why, between now and the end of this year, MoveOn is running a series of cutting-edge experiments to develop the next best new messages and strategies to get out the vote and persuade undecided voters. However, donations to MoveOn are down sharply in 2021, and if we don't catch up, we'll be at a huge disadvantage going into next year's elections. Will you chip in $5 a month to sustain our work for the long haul?
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
The plan outlined by Trump lawyer John Eastman called for Vice President Pence to ignore Electoral College votes from seven Biden states that submitted "multiple slates of electors." The election would then be thrown to the House of Representatives, where each state delegation would get one vote and Republicans hold a 26-24 advantage.
It might seem far-fetched, but the Republican Party of Donald Trump is a racist, authoritarian, anti-democratic party that will do anything to regain power.
Meanwhile, Republican state legislatures are passing voter suppression laws targeting low-income voters and people of color. Republicans running for secretary of state—the official who will oversee a state's election process in 2024— in key battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Nevada are all backers of Trump's Big Lie.2
To ensure free and fair elections and save American democracy, we must stop Republicans from winning control of Congress—and then win in 2024 by a big enough margin to prevent any attempt to overturn the results of the election.
Here's the plan: Our team is currently researching and developing the innovative strategies we need to overcome GOP voter suppression and get out the vote. We know we can do it, because we’ve done it before.
For example, in 2020, we implemented a friend-to-friend voter turnout strategy that proved to be five times more effective than strategies we’d used in the past like phoning and going door to door. But every time we come up with a breakthrough strategy, the other side copies us. So we need to keep innovating to stay a step ahead.
Implementing these plans across enough districts to really make a difference won't be cheap, and since Donald Trump left office, donations to progressive groups like MoveOn have fallen sharply. That's why we're urgently coming to you today and asking you to chip in whatever you can.
Will you donate $5 a month to help stop Republicans from winning control in the midterm elections and save our democracy?
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.
