Friend,
While Democrats focus all their efforts on driving up the national debt, our Congressman Mike Gallagher has been playing a key role in questioning top military leaders to get to the bottom of how and why our withdrawal from Afghanistan ended in such an avoidable, disastrous fashion.
In case you missed the recent hearings, here’s a recap of how Mike has been holding our leaders accountable: [READ] REP. GALLAGHER: TRUSTING TALIBAN WAS “ORIGINAL SIN” THAT LED TO AVOIDABLE DEATHS OF SERVICE MEMBERS
Bottom Line: “[Rep. Mike Gallagher] argues that a top general's decision to turn down the Taliban’s offer to allow the United States to secure Kabul and instead rely on the Taliban and the terrorist Haqqani network was the “original sin” that led to the suicide bombing in which 13 U.S. service members were killed. Gallagher asked McKenzie if it was true that the Taliban offered to allow the U.S. to maintain security over all of Kabul, not just the airport, when the Afghan government collapsed on Aug. 15. The general confirmed it and said he turned the offer down. – Washington Examiner
[READ] REP. GALLAGHER QUESTIONS GEN. MCKINZIE ON REJECTED OFFER TO CONTROL KABUL DURING EVACUATION
Bottom Line: “The head of the US Central Command admitted Wednesday that the Taliban offered to let American troops take charge of security in Kabul during the final days of the US evacuation from Afghanistan — an offer the US did not accept — while Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin blamed the State Department for the failed evacuation of American citizens, green card holders and Afghan allies.” – New York Post
[LISTEN] REP. GALLAGHER PUSHES BACK ON FALSE CLAIM THAT WITHDRAWAL WAS A “LOGISTICAL SUCCESS”
Bottom Line: “I would say you’re seeing a million others try to hide behind this strategic failure. But logistical success, even on just the logistical side, the operation of surrender and withdrawal itself, I think it was a massive failure so for the top brass to portray it as a success, I think is a lie. And, you know, I expect Biden to lie to us, but I don’t expect a four star general to do it.” – Rep. Gallagher
Friend, while we are making progress, the fight for accountability and transparency is far from over –– and we will keep you updated as Mike continues to do the hard work necessary to deliver the answers our country deserves.
Thank you, Gallagher Foreign Policy Team
