Education

Three Steps to Being Ready for LGBTQ+ History Month

October is LGBTQ+ History Month! Be sure to brush up on your LGBTQ+ history so that you’re ready to go all month long.

  1. Learn: Check out pflag.org/lgbthistoryrecording to take a look at some websites, films, books, and other resources that will help you learn more about LGBTQ+ history, no matter where you are on your learning journey. Be sure to visit the official LGBT History Month website to learn more about the month as a whole and some of the icons that will be celebrated.
  2. Watch: PFLAG Academy On-Demand includes multiple sessions for those who would like to learn more about LGBTQ+ history and culture in the United States. Check out sessions like, “Don't Know Much About LGBTQ History?: The Ultimate LGBTQ History and Culture Extravaganza” and “When LGBTQ Past and Present Collide! How LGBTQ History Can Illuminate Today’s Challenges.” For some compelling listening, check out the Making Gay History podcast, with episodes featuring PFLAG founder Jeanne Manford and her son, activist Morty Manford, and past PFLAG National president Paulette Goodman.
  3. Share: Share PFLAG’s LGBTQ+ History Month campaign on social media. Follow LGBTQ+ history accounts on social media, such as Making Gay History, The History Project and Queer History.

Advocacy

The new PFLAG National Advocacy hub: pflag.org/advocacy

ICYMI: We’re excited to announce our new advocacy hub, to keep you in-the-know and up-to-date when it comes to using your voice as a PFLAG National member or supporter. This new site replaces our older publication, ONE VOICE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, allowing us to keep the content fresh and focused on the work at hand. Whether it’s learning more about the legislation we’re pushing for (or fighting against), resources, toolkits, and templates to assist in your advocacy or teach you about lobbying, or quick links that make it easy to take action on current pieces of legislation that will create equity and protections for LGBTQ+ people and their families, these newly revamped pages will meet you wherever you’re at to better support your efforts at all levels. All of this begins today at pflag.org/advocacy

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, October 7 at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM for Something to Talk About Live! This week, we’ll be discussing "The LGBTQ+ History Exhibit That (Unfortunately) Made History," from Advocate, by Rodney Wilson.

We're also very excited to welcome two notable guests to the show this week:

Journalist and author Eric Marcus is the founder and host of the award-winning Making Gay History podcast, which mines his decades-old audio archive of rare interviews to bring LGBTQ history to life through the voices of the people who lived it. Dr. Eric Cervini is an award-winning historian of LGBTQ+ politics, a NYT bestselling author, and a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his first book, THE DEVIANT’S WAR: The Homosexual vs. the United States of America

You can watch live on YouTube, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

For more information--and to check out our discussion questions in advance--visit straightforequality.org/something-talk-about-live-october-7-2021.
