Dear Friend,
Today, the Supreme Court begins its new term. Twenty six years ago, I served as a law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a term where she continued her work to advance equal justice for all. During that year, I observed up close her unlikely, but powerful, friendship ([link removed]) with Justice Antonin Scalia (with whom she often disagreed).

To honor their relationship, I have launched the Ginsburg-Scalia Initiative, focusing on the importance of respectful engagement and dialogue. As part of that initiative, the Attorney General Alliance ([link removed]) , which I chair, brought together leaders from Colorado and Attorneys General from around the nation this summer in Colorado Springs.

Together, we discussed the importance of defending the rule of law, rigorously analyzing issues, and engaging in collaborative problem solving. Inspired by the relationship between Justices Ginsburg and Scalia, we grappled with the challenges of political polarization and misinformation—fueled by social media—and worked to develop solutions.

On Constitution Day ([link removed]) , I continued this work by joining a high school class to engage in a dialogue about the challenges facing our democratic republic. The students were hungry for civic engagement and frustrated by the levels of hatred and polarization they see around them. So am I. By being our best authentic selves and practicing empathy, we can all do our part to advance the project of encouraging more listening and respectful dialogue.

Thank you for your support as I continue to do my part to work with you towards a more perfect union.
