Team—
On December 1, we will appear before the U.S. Supreme Court to argue our case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. The case challenges Mississippi's ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy—a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade's core holding that every person has the right to decide whether to continue their pregnancy prior to viability.
This marks the first time the Supreme Court will review the constitutionality of a pre-viability abortion ban since its landmark decision in Roe in 1973.
The stakes couldn't be higher. Give now to defend abortion access.
Two weeks ago, thousands joined us in urging the Supreme Court to strike down the Mississippi law and once again reaffirm the constitutional right to abortion.
In more than 50 amicus briefs submitted on September 20, a broad range of voices demonstrated the groundswell of support for abortion rights, liberty rights, and racial, gender, and economic justice. Among them were:
- More than 500 athletes—including U.S. Women's National Soccer team forward Megan Rapinoe, WNBA All-Star Layshia Clarendon, and more than two dozen Olympians—explaining how access to abortion has allowed athletes to chart their own futures and pursue careers in professional sports.
- More than 6,600 individuals who have had abortions joining a brief that shares the stories of dozens of people about why abortion access is so vital—and how it has shaped the lives of people in the U.S.
- Leaders in racial and reproductive justice explain how abortion bans disproportionately harm Black women, people of color, and people having difficulty making ends meet, who already face systemic barriers to health care.
- U.N. human rights experts, who argue that the U.S. would contradict its human rights obligations if it upholds the Mississippi abortion ban.
- Economists who cited research showing how Roe and the right to abortion helped to advance women's social and economic lives, and overruling Roe would impair that progress.
We're grateful to each of these individuals and groups for supporting this case and making clear to the Supreme Court how important abortion rights are to people's lives. And we're grateful to you for your support as we continue preparing for our day before the Court.
Sincerely,
Hillary Schneller
Senior Staff Attorney, U.S. Litigation
