Last week was a lot

Indivisibles,

Last week was a lot (for a summary, check out Leah’s post about progressives holding the line for Build Back Better on Medium) but today is Monday, and we have new work to do.

First, reconciliation: We hope you took some time to celebrate this weekend! Not only did we have a massive show of the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ strength last week, we also made major progress towards advancing President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. Click here for a great New York Times story about how progressives are throwing down for the Biden agenda.

But this work isn’t done yet. The next major deadline is October 31, which is when the current short-term funding for transportation and infrastructure runs out (meaning we need to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework (BIF) before then… and we need to pass reconciliation before BIF.) So it’s on us to continue pressing Congress to pass reconciliation through both the House and Senate.

Second, democracy: The Senate Judiciary Committee has a hearing on the John Lewis Voting Rights Act on Wednesday (10/6). It’s not a markup, so there won’t be any votes, but we do expect some ridiculous comments from Republicans who are opposed to protecting the right to vote.

We may see another failed procedural vote on Sen. Manchin’s Freedom to Vote Act bill in the next couple weeks. If that happens, we expect it to tee up a fight over the filibuster in late October. Here’s our resource on the Freedom to Vote Act, in case you want to brush up on the details -- a reminder that this bill builds on but is not the same as the For the People Act, and it has a new bill number. So be careful when you’re making calls not to accidentally call it “S. 1” or “H.R. 1!”

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. Make calls on an inclusive recovery package before it’s too late! Progressives were able to hold their ground on the terms of an inclusive recovery, so now we’re fighting to get the full Build Back Better Act passed by October 31. This means we’re in a key moment for advocacy as we fight to win the most progressive reconciliation bill possible. With just a few days left until the House vote, it is urgent that you call your representative and tell them how important it is that we pass an inclusive recovery bill that works for everyone. Once you have called your representative, click here to call your senators and demand they pass the bill immediately after the House sends it over.
  2. Call your senator and Demand they move quickly on the Freedom to Vote Act. Senate Democrats have released a new version of their democracy reform bill called the Freedom to Vote Act. The Freedom to Vote Act builds on the For the People Act and brings us closer to passing transformational democracy reform this Congress. Call your senators and let them know you want them to adjust the filibuster now to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
  3. Call your senator and tell them to protect Roe V. Wade now. The House has passed the Women's Health Protection Act, a bill aimed at preserving access to an abortion nationwide, as Republican-led state legislatures pass countless bills across the country threatening abortion rights. The bill now has to pass a vote in the Senate, which is why it is urgent that you call your senator and demand they protect reproductive rights.

P.S. -- We’re able to fund the ads, call scripts, tools, and work of huge weeks like last week because of the generous support of grassroots donors, particularly recurring donors whose support we can count on every month. If you’re able, click here to make a recurring or one-time gift to help fund our work.

Indivisibles in Pennsylvania marched for abortion access and reproductive rights on Saturday.

On Saturday, Indivisibles across Pennsylvania (along with Indivisibles across the country) marched for reproductive rights, urging their current senator to #BeBold and stand for women’s right to choose.

This week is going to be a doozy, so be sure to keep up to date on all our priorities as they move through Congress by following us on Twitter, or texting INDIVISIBLE to 97779 to join our rapid response team. Thanks for being in this movement with us.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team

Indivisible Project is a locally-led, people-powered movement of thousands of local groups in red, blue, and purple states, and in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Our mission is to power and lift up a grassroots movement of local groups to defeat the Trump agenda, elect progressive leaders, and realize bold progressive policies.

Grassroots donations, not foundations or large gifts, are our single largest source of funding. That means we’re accountable to, and fueled by, Indivisibles on the ground. Chip in $7 to keep fueling our movement.
