MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS September 28 - October 4, 2021 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Thursday, TASS Russian News Agency reported that joint military exercises with Serbia will take place in mid-October. The exercise, named Slavic Shield, will engage the Russian Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile systems. Also on Thursday, it was announced that Turkish President Erdogan is in talks with Russian President Putin about strengthening the defense ties between the two countries. The discussions have involved cooperation on missiles, ships, warplanes, and submarines. These talks come despite preexisting and threatened future U.S. sanctions on Turkey for cooperating more with Russia. On Friday, more than two dozen Chinese fighter jets entered Taiwan's air defense zone. In response, Taiwan deployed planes and missile system to track and warn off the Chinese fighters. This incident is just one of several shows of aggression on behalf of China. Also on Friday, it was announced that the Czech Republic had signed a $627 million deal for the purchase of Israel's Spyder surface-to-air missile system. The new system will go to replace the Soviet-era Kub systems that no longer cover the Czech Republic's defense needs, according to the Defense Minister. On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that it had conducted a successful test of a Zircon hypersonic missile from a Severodvinsk nuclear submarine.
