At a time when the climate crisis demands that we move away from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy, it’s outrageous and irresponsible for our government to allow and expand fracking and drilling on public lands.

Fracking — short for hydraulic fracturing – is an extreme and dangerous way of extracting oil and gas that uses a high-pressure mix of water and toxic chemicals to break up deep shale formations. Fracking causes water contamination, air pollution, earthquakes, and massive amounts of methane leakage. It’s time to put an end to this recklessness. Banning fracking on public lands is a no-brainer!

Together, we can move towards the climate future we all deserve, but we need to take bold, immediate climate action by banning fracking and stopping new fossil fuel extraction on public lands.

There is no question fracking hurts people and communities, devastates land and water, and harms wildlife. But Big Oil & Gas has been allowed — and even encouraged by its political enablers — to continue to do just that, despite these places being set aside by past generations for the protection and enjoyment of future generations.

Enough is enough. The inherent danger of fracking means that no set of regulations can ever make it safe for public health or our environment. We need to ban fracking everywhere, but the first step is saving public lands from the fracking free-for-all that our political leaders have allowed. On the campaign trail, Joe Biden was adamant about stopping oil and gas drilling on public lands. Now it’s up to us to hold him accountable and ensure he follows through.
