Dear John,
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced today that a 30-day public comment period will begin on November 9, when citizens can comment on the current rules that allow copper mining in the Boundary Waters watershed, and the inadequacy of those mining rules to protect the Boundary Waters.
As a result of our groundbreaking state lawsuit, citizens who care about the Boundary Waters will soon have a chance to change Minnesota’s 28-year-old copper-mining rules that have left the Wilderness vulnerable to pollution, damage and destruction.
This is an important opportunity for the Boundary Waters because the review could result in a prohibition of sulfide-ore copper mining in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters.
Rush a donation today so we can continue working on multiple strategic fronts to permanently protect the Boundary Waters. Your input is critical. You can help us mobilize Boundary Waters defenders everywhere to participate at the key moments. Watch our new short video to learn more about the path to permanent protection for the Boundary Waters, and rush a gift today to protect this wild and beautiful place. Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness, the founder and lead organization of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, brought this unique lawsuit in January, 2021 under the Minnesota Environmental Rights Act.
Our lawsuit asserts that sulfide-ore copper mining should be banned in the watershed altogether as the only way to protect the Boundary Waters and downstream waters in Quetico Provincial Park and Voyageurs National Park from pollution, impairment, and destruction.
Give today, and get ready to make your case about the value and importance of the Boundary Waters and the need to protect it forever.
For the Wilderness,
Becky Rom
