Dear John

It’s World Animal Day today, and we’re celebrating the amazing work you’ve helped us achieve for wild animals this month. There are so many success stories:

YOUR TIGER FEAT!

Thanks to YOUR kind donations, £46,350 has been raised for our Tigers in Crisis ( [link removed] ) appeal. Wow! Your generosity never ceases to amaze and inspire us, and will help keep wild tigers safe from poachers, stop captive exploitation AND provide care for rescued individuals. Tigertastic!

UNIQUE BOOK TO AID ELEPHANTS

Great news, Saving Elephants ( [link removed] ) by acclaimed photographer Alwyn R Coates has just reached it's target. Thanks to your pledges, this beautiful new book - with breathtaking images - can now go into production to raise funds for elephants.

DEFUSE THE TICKING TIME BOMB

Your support has enabled Born Free to collaborate with the RSPCA to publish a hard-hitting new report on exotic pets in the UK and call on the government to radically overhaul the legislation on keeping wild animals as pets – not least rare or dangerous species to ensure their needs are met. It’s about time!

TWO BROTHERS – ONE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY

A pair of endangered elephants are on a 560-mile West African walkabout to Liberia, after their mother was killed by poachers. Born Free, along with other NGOs, are working hard to keep them safe. This urgent, lifesaving work, is only possible with your generous support, and on their behalf, we thank you so much.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE YOU MAKE!

A victim of France’s illegal pet trade, Cersei was a terrified, sickly lion cub when found in a garage three years ago. But look at her now! Safe at our sanctuary in South Africa, she’s grown into a beautiful young adult, living happily with her best friend Ciam, another lion rescued from France.

TWISTS & TURNS OF GORILLA FORTUNE

Silverback gorilla Mugaruka lost a hand in a poacher’s wire snare and lives alone in DR Congo’s rainforests. Meanwhile, his cousin Chimanuka defends a big family nearby. Despite his disability, Mugaruka remains popular with the ladies and keeps challenging Chimanuka to win back a female. Their latest skirmish left Mugaruka wounded but, he’s recovered well and our team keep tabs on their daily patrols. Thanks for keeping these rare apes safe with your generosity!

NEWTON SIMIYU

Newton is Head of Saving Meru's Giants our major new elephant and giraffe conservation programme in Meru, Kenya. A Kenyan national, Newton has nine years conservation experience and been part of our Pride of Meru lion conservation programme for six years. “I am inspired to protect nature,” Newton explains. “If conservation measures are not put in place, future generations will not have a chance to see some of the wild animals that exist today.”

There are so many reasons to be cheerful this month! Thank you for all you do to help Born Free. Together, this World Animal Day, we are keeping it wild with you!
