Unfortunately, the answer to that question is YES. For far too long, politicians have gotten away with manipulating the maps in a way that allows them to all but ensure their own election victories -- and the consequences for our democracy have been disastrous.
In state legislatures all over the country, Republicans from gerrymandered districts are passing extreme, highly unpopular laws.
And in Congress, extreme, far-right Republicans like Jim Jordan and Marjorie Taylor Greene stoke insurrection while secure in the knowledge that they do not have to face the voters on a level playing field.
Unfortunately, it can often seem as if there’s very little voters can do to stop them. Take the 2020 congressional results in North Carolina and Wisconsin, for example: Despite receiving nearly 50% of the vote in both states, Democrats ended up with less than 40% of the states’ seats in the U.S. House.
That’s why the NDRC is working around the clock to make sure Republicans don’t get away with using this year’s redistricting process to manipulate the maps yet again. But some draft maps have already been published, and we’re running out of time to fight back!
