Time and time again, misreading of data from the government’s Yellow Card Scheme has led to widespread bad information and confusion about the safety of vaccines.

New changes mean that the public will be warned more clearly about the dangers of using this data incorrectly.

Reports of suspected reactions to Covid-19 vaccines are not the same as official government statistics, so they shouldn’t be used that way. The Yellow Card Scheme, which collects and monitors self-reported side effects or “adverse incidents” following a vaccine, is voluntary. Not all side effects reported after a vaccine are necessarily because of the vaccine.

Last May, we told the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which runs the Yellow Card Scheme, that warnings about how to use Yellow Card data should appear much more prominently on their website.

After several months of back and forth, the MHRA has now taken action.

It’s a great step in the right direction. But we’ve seen the numbers misused on countless occasions, even among our own lawmakers.

Just recently, Sir Christopher Chope MP incorrectly used Yellow Card data to make a slew of unsubstantiated claims about vaccines in parliament. When vaccines are a part of the pandemic recovery, we simply deserve better than bad information.
