If you’re watching the budget negotiations in DC, you’re probably wondering why — even though Democrats control the White House, Senate, and House — they can’t pass an agenda that would help people.
The truth is, we’re in a climate catastrophe and neither of these bills rise to the occasion.
These bills are already a compromise, and even the climate provisions aren’t enough. The bills include fossil fuel subsidies, expand oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and would make it easier to push through pipelines and other unpopular fossil fuel projects.
Somehow Democrats are negotiating against themselves, when the climate crisis demands that they go big.
The infrastructure bills should have funding and a timeline for ending fossil fuels by 2030. That’s what I’d be pushing for in Congress right now. These bills are a start and I would vote for them, but they’re not enough.
