Dorothy Bolden is one of those people I wish everyone could have met.
She once refused a request from her white employer to stay late and wash the dishes. Her boss responded by calling the police, then she was taken to a county jail for a psychiatric evaluation.
This was the reality for domestic workers -- especially women of color -- in the first half of the century. Her response was to look at the racist, brutal treatment and ORGANIZE.
Domestic workers are STILL excluded from basic worker protections. Abuse, harassment, and exploitation are STILL too common. Now, we have a chance to change that.
Ask your Member of Congress to support the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.
The Domestic Workers Bill of Rights Act is a new bill before Congress right now -- and it would WIN rights and recognitions for domestic workers.
But this desperately needed change will only move forward if we can get overwhelming support. We've set a goal of getting 75 cosponsors in the House of Representatives in the next 2 months. And with 63 Representatives already signed on, we're nearly there!
Will you send an email to your Member of Congress, , asking them to sign on as a co-sponsor of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights?
Dorothy rode every bus line in Atlanta to speak with other domestic workers. She turned a trip home into a defacto union meeting for where workers could share grievances, support each other and get organized.
She registered thousands of Black women to vote. And she got herself appointed to a presidential advisory committee on welfare and social services where she won workers' compensation and social security rights for all domestic workers across the country.
The group she started, the National Domestic Workers Union of America, is a HUGE inspiration to us at the National Domestic Workers Alliance. We are proud to stand on her shoulders -- and we need your support to build on her legacy.
You can help fight the injustice domestic workers have faced since the time of slavery.
Send a message today to voice your support for the 2 million nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers across the nation that deserve critical protections at work.
Thanks for all you do,
