Friend -- Last night, I participated in an all night sleepout in Annapolis to protest the failure of our state government to protect tenants from eviction. The impacts of eviction and homelessness are devastating here in Maryland, especially for communities of color and those facing financial uncertainty, so for those of us who are privileged enough to have a roof over our heads, one night of sleeping outside is nothing compared to what some Marylanders experience every day. It’s the very least we can do to demand better and more just housing practices. [[link removed]]

With yesterday being the first of the month, thousands of Maryland households already behind on their rent felt the impact of another month gone by that Governor Hogan has refused to extend protections for individuals facing eviction. So I was proud to join CASA, an organization fighting to protect Maryland immigrants and working families, at their rally in front of the Maryland Statehouse to make one thing clear: Maryland must reinstate the eviction moratorium. It is absolutely inexcusable to have federal dollars—which are specifically allocated to address the needs of both tenants and landlords—just waiting to be distributed while thousands of Marylanders are at risk of losing their homes. Housing is a human right, and it’s time we had a governor who leads on that principle.

Join me in urging Governor Hogan to extend the moratorium by signing our petition [[link removed]] :
