Dear friend. I was elected to serve working families. That has been my guiding principle for every decision I’ve made since I first ran for office. It’s what I think of every time I cast a vote or oversee a committee hearing. And, it’s why I am committed to withholding my vote on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan until we pass our Build Back Better agenda. Together, these bills will not only invest in our roads and bridges, but also in our communities. Working families in New York City and across the country need this investment in our care infrastructure -- including child care, paid medical and family leaves, and home care. Our neighborhoods need climate-resilient infrastructure and an equitable transition to a green economy. Immigrants need a pathway to citizenship and legal protections. This is a once-in-a-generation investment -- and we must make it. That’s why, Thursday, progressive representatives from New York and across the country committed to fighting for the bold agenda we were elected to enact. We must pass the Build Back Better Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan together. I am proud to be one of the first New Yorkers to make this commitment and to have led many of my colleagues to do the same. Rushing the infrastructure plan on an arbitrary timeline -- without also passing the rest of our agenda -- is not in the best interest of working families.
