Hi,
If you have a state-issued driver’s license or ID, chances are high that
ICE agents have seen your face.
Recent reporting reveals that ICE agents routinely use state DMV photos
for facial recognition scanning^1 – without consent from millions of
ID-holders across the country. [ [link removed] ]Tell Congress to protect your face from
ICE. Sign the petition: Ban ICE from using DMV photos for facial
recognition.
You might be asking, “how is that even legal?” and the answer would
surprise you: Technically, it’s not. Neither Congress or state
legislatures have authorized ICE to access state DMV databases for facial
recognition scanning. But until there’s an explicit ban, ICE can continue
to just ask DMVs for facial recognition scans.
By now, it’s common knowledge that facial recognition technologies are
fraught with racial and gender biases. Even though facial recognition
technology uses complicated algorithms for matching faces, they still
can’t accurately tell black, brown and female faces apart from each other.
That racial and gender bias becomes exponentially dangerous in the hands
of individual ICE agents.
Congress can permanently ban ICE agents from using DMV photos for facial
recognition scanning, and there’s already growing support. Which means
your voice is crucial to building public support for a facial recognition
ban. [ [link removed] ]Tell your member of Congress: Ban ICE from using DMV photos for
facial recognition.
