Dear allies,

As we transition to a new phase of this pandemic, safety is of the utmost importance. During these challenging times, we must stand together and fight for the future we deserve. This November, we will be electing leaders across the region and it is imperative that we elect leaders who will prioritize us and the needs of our communities.

Through rallies, petitions, and online advocacy, we’re spearheading meaningful change at the grassroots level. Last week, we delivered over 1,800 signatures to demand the approval of an updated Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO). Boston’s City Council unanimously approved the initiative ([link removed]) , and we celebrate this significant victory.

Boston Children’s Collaboration for Community Health
We are proud to announce CLU’s selection as a funded partner for the Boston Children’s Collaboration for Community Health. The grant will award $300,000 over three years to the Care That Works ([link removed]) Pilot program. This initiative provides working-class families with affordable child care services, available during nonstandard hours when parents are most in need.

Child care remains an economic necessity for working families, especially as more sectors of the economy begin to reopen. This Pilot Program uses an online platform, Carina Care ([link removed]) , to connect families with providers looking for high-quality child care in their area. The Collaboration will allow Care That Works to continue promoting equity and stability for children, families, and caregivers and their greater communities.

BERDO 2.0 Petition Delivery
Last Monday, environmental justice advocates gathered at the Boston City Hall to deliver signed petitions calling for the passing and reinforcement of Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO). The bill, unanimously approved by the City Council and awaiting signature from Mayor Janey, will establish much-needed emissions caps on Boston’s buildings.

Save The Date: Rally and Hearing on the Uber Bill
The Coalition to Protect Workers’ Rights will host a rally ahead of a public hearing on HB1234, a bill that grants “gig economy” companies special exemptions from paying taxes and from following our state labor, insurance, consumer protection, and civil rights laws. We Run the Vote Conference
On Saturday, September 25, grassroots organizations and partners participated in the 2021 We Run the Vote Conference hosted by grassroots leaders leading organizing school, the democracy hubs and civic engagement work focused on empowering low-income, communities of color across the Commonwealth. The conference was anchored by: New England United for Justice ([link removed]) , MassVoter Table, MassVote and Right to the City Boston. Allies from the Greater Boston region from Boston, Chelsea, Brockton, Quincy and beyond, gathered to hold a space centering shared learning around managing field teams, moving an effective field strategy, self care practices, and technical assistance and training.

We’re proud of our partners at NEU4J and allies for leading this critical step to increase civic engagement during this historic moment in Boston. In order to enact change on key issues, voters must come out to the polls.

Building Jobs with Justice Hearing
On Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m., along with Michele Walsh, SEIU 509; and Brian Doherty, Greater Boston Building Trades Council; our executive director, Lee Matsueda testified at the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy in favor of Senator Marc Pacheco’s bill building justice with jobs. This bill will put thousands of people to work retrofitting one million homes over the next decade to make them safer, healthier and more efficient.
