Dear Neighbor:
This week, I joined my colleagues in voting to pass a Continuing Resolution to keep the government open and avoid a shutdown, which would devastate workers, freeze key government services, and seriously harm the economy. President Biden signed this legislation into law last night. The resolution extends funding for education, jobs, housing, health, and public safety programs through December 3rd, in addition to delivering $28.6 billion in disaster relief.
I also voted in support of must-pass legislation to prevent a default on the federal debt, which is projected to occur the third week of October if no action is taken. If the United States were to default on its debt, it would result in an economic crisis that would harm millions of American workers and families. Addressing the debt limit is not about future spending. It is about meeting obligations the government has already made, 97% of which occurred during the former Administration. Although this traditionally bipartisan legislation to raise the debt ceiling and avert an economic catastrophe did not receive support from our colleagues across the aisle, Democrats are honoring our constitutional responsibility to the American people to protect the full faith and credit of the United States. We will try again and I hope our colleagues will either join us, or at least not block us from preventing the United States from defaulting.
