Dear John,
The September issue’s Narrative Matters essay discusses the lasting impact of long COVID.
On Long COVID
In her Narrative Matters essay, Maria Victoria Bovo, a pediatrician, shares her experience with the debilitating symptoms of long COVID.
Bovo describes feeling lasting tiredness, breathlessness, and continuous headaches and “brain fog,” which has reduced her attention span, concentration, and memory.
“COVID-19 did not end my life, but it stopped me. It dragged me down from the high-velocity train on which I was riding. I stood up, fell down, and stood up
again,” she explains.
Studies show that 5 to 20 percent of patients with COVID-19 are affected long term, and the development and severity of long COVID don’t seem to correlate with the severity of the disease during the acute phase of the infection.
Check out Bovo reading the essay in English and Spanish on the Narrative Matters podcast.
Today on Health Affairs Blog, Katie Keith and coauthors summarize the highly anticipated new rule on the independent dispute resolution process that will be used to resolve payment disputes between payers and providers. A second post, to be published Monday, October 4, will discuss other parts of the rule related to good faith estimates, external review, and more. John-Martin Lowe and coauthors discuss the need for an improved response to the next special pathogen outbreak.
In a new GrantWatch post, Tara Oakman and coauthors describe how two foundations collaborated to facilitate the implementation of Maine's Medicaid expansion.
