Hello Friend,
When we remember 1October, our thoughts revolve around those who were senselessly killed, the survivors, and their families. But it's equally important that we remember which leaders have stood with our community to act to prevent future tragedy - and those who do not. And when those in the latter category eschew the hard-fought progress Nevada has made on gun violence prevention since 1October, it simply must be called out. Which brings us to Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo…
Sheriff Lombardo wants to be the next Governor of Nevada. But he is clearly preoccupied with pandering to the gun lobby than keeping our community safe. His statement that, “it’s the person, not the gun,” completely ignores that common sense gun laws prevent tragedies like 1October. Background checks and Extreme Risk Protection Orders are designed to stop mass shootings, community violence and domestic violence. Instead, Lombardo chooses to blame, “liberals.” He should know better that divisive and dismissive comments are the opposite of what Nevada communities need to be protected from gun violence.
The most deadly mass shooting in modern history cannot be simply hand-waived. Until leaders acknowledge the factor of accessibility of deadly weapons, they will merely be pointing fingers, rather than acting to keep their communities safe. Today we choose to honor victims, survivors, not just with reflection, but with effort. Part of that is holding those with power accountable for their disrespect and lack of action around gun safety.
Sincerely,
|
