Dear friend,

I have some exciting news to share. We’ve analyzed the data, and we’re now at last able to share our analysis of the impact of The Big Send 2020—our massive campaign to send GOTV letters to voters in 21 states—with you. I know this took quite some time and that many have been eagerly anticipating the results. I think it was worth the wait! Because what we’re seeing is pretty extraordinary:

We found that Vote Forward letter writing in 2020 was among the highest-impact, most effective voter turnout programs ever measured in a presidential election.

This is BIG.

During the 2020 general election, 200,000 volunteers sent 17.6 million Vote Forward letters to voters to increase voter turnout as part of The Big Send. We assess that the voters included in The Big Send cast ballots at a 0.8 percentage point higher rate than those in the control group. That translates to 126,000 net votes across the program as a whole. No matter how you slice it, the analysis places the Vote Forward letter program among the most effective GOTV programs in presidential elections.

So friend, we thank all our volunteers for being part of this effort—for devoting time, energy, attention, and resources to encouraging fellow citizens to cast a ballot. Vote Forward volunteers worked hard to make the program a success and strengthened our democracy one letter at a time, millions of times over.

Because once again, Vote Forward letters have proven to be exceedingly effective at increasing turnout, and in an election with the highest of stakes. We hope you are as proud to learn about the impact you had as we were to discover it!

So what now? Well, in addition to this big analysis project, we’ve been hard at work this year on a number of experiments to help make an even bigger impact in the crucial elections coming up next year and beyond. We’ve tested out “Thank you for voting” letters, carefully crafted personal messages, and bilingual letters in English and Spanish, to name just a few.

As many of you know, having written letters to them already, we’re also trying to reach more than a million voters in Virginia. This is an important voter turnout project in its own right, and another experiment to gauge the impact of the combination of multiple layers of letters. What we learn will help us structure our program for 2022 for maximum effect.

With only 32 days until Virginia's critical Election Day, our team has been working tirelessly to develop campaigns, analyze data, and improve the letter writing experience for volunteers like you. Please consider making a $25 contribution to help us continue our efforts:

Thank you as always for all of your efforts! We’re very proud to be doing this work with you.
