Message from Acting President
Adrienne Kimmell
Reproductive freedom and the legal right to abortion face real and unprecedented threats, and there’s still much to do to secure our fundamental rights. But—thanks to the relentless efforts of NARAL members like you who called, emailed, and visited their members of Congress—we've seen critical victories, including:
- an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that ensures contraception coverage without co-pays passed in the House;
- the Biden administration rescinded an anti-choice Trump rule restricting abortion coverage; and
- the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) in an historic vote, and the Biden administration announced its support of this landmark legislation.
Now to safeguard the federal right to abortion the Senate must swiftly pass the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA). We know our voices are being heard—these critical wins show us just that—but we can’t afford to let up now when so much is on the line. We’ve got to keep fighting to protect reproductive freedom for every body.

Time to #RallyForAbortionJustice
When the Supreme Court refused to take action and allowed Texas’ vigilante-enforced ban on abortion go into effect, we saw a massive public outcry—and our voices are only getting louder. On Saturday, October 2nd, NARAL, over 150 organizations, and supporters across the country will come together to #RallyForAbortionJustice. Our call to action is clear, and it’s urgent. Our right to legal abortion is on the line, and we need you in this fight with us now more than ever.

NARAL Members Take Action
In a historic vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which would protect the right to abortion throughout the United States should Roe v. Wade fall. This victory would not have been possible without the help of NARAL members who took action to make nearly 67,000 calls and send over 52,000 texts to supporters across the country. Thanks to your efforts, Congress received over 2,100 calls and nearly 17,000 emails from constituents demanding that they make abortion access and reproductive freedom a priority by passing WHPA.
Now the Senate must take immediate action and pass WHPA. This is a critical moment for reproductive freedom, and your senator needs to hear from you right now. Tell them to vote YES on WHPA!

Combating Disinformation
In the wake of backlash against Texas’ extreme ban on abortion, anti-choice activists are doubling down on spreading disinformation and misleading claims in an attempt to distort the narrative around SB 8 and potential copycat bans. NARAL’s Research team monitored and analyzed these efforts and compiled our findings into a memo.

ICYMI: Why WHPA? Why Now?
On September 14, 2021, Professor Michele Goodwin and New York Times best selling author Rebecca Traister joined NARAL Acting President Adrienne Kimmell for “Why WHPA, Why Now?” They discussed the implications of Texas’ extreme ban on abortion (SB 8), what’s at stake with the Supreme Court's inaction in this case, the upcoming abortion case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and how the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA) would safeguard the legal right to abortion throughout the country. If you weren’t able to attend the event, you can still watch on NARAL’s Facebook Page.

Donor Spotlight
“Reproductive freedom allows people self-determination—giving people control of their lives, families and futures. It includes access to contraception and abortion, as well as supporting parenting and reducing maternal mortality. As an OBGYN, I’ve provided abortion services throughout my career in safe environments. But I kept seeing the rights of pregnant people restricted and access denied as politicians legislated reproductive healthcare. I realize the solution is political—and NARAL is the leader in the political fight for reproductive freedom.”

MEDICATION ABORTION RESTRICTIONS
And the attacks on abortion access just keep coming. Just weeks after the Supreme Court refused to block Texas’ SB 8—the most extreme ban on abortion in the country—anti-choice Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed into law SB 4, a law that further restricts access to medication abortion care, a safe, effective, and FDA-approved option for ending an early pregnancy.

COPYCAT BANS
Lawmakers in 12 states have announced their intentions or plans to copy Texas’ SB 8, the vigilante-enforced ban on abortion before many people know they are pregnant. And on September 22nd, a lawmaker in Florida introduced a bill modeled after the cruel anti-choice law. The dominoes are starting to fall.
|
The Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA) would safeguard the legal right to abortion and protect reproductive freedom throughout the country—no matter what happens at the state level. Tell your senator to vote YES on WHPA NOW!

Fund the Movement
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to allow Texas’ draconian ban on abortion to go into effect renders Roe meaningless in the state. And let’s be clear: This isn’t stopping in Texas—already anti-choice lawmakers in 12 states have voiced their intentions to pursue copycat legislation. That’s why we need WHPA now!
The threat to the constitutional right to abortion is real and imminent, and your support is vital to protecting the legal right to abortion and ensuring reproductive freedom is a reality for every body.
Please consider making a gift to help fuel our work and pass WHPA.
