In addition, more than 70 percent of youth in the juvenile justice system have a diagnosed mental illness. While mental illness can feel isolating, statistics like these show that you are not alone, whether you are suffering from a mental illness or know someone who is. Mental Illness Awareness Week is from October 3-9, and you can find resources and stats to use in your schools on the website of the National Alliance for Mental Illness or on NASN's website. Virtual NASN2021 Deadline Extended We understand that the beginning of this school year has been an extremely trying time to wrap up Virtual NASN2021. Because of this, NASN is extending the conference deadline to October 15. This is the final deadline NASN can extend as we are already moving forward with the development of new programs and products for the fall. Please view all content and complete CNE requirements including session assessments and evaluations by this deadline. New CDC Resource on Multisystem Inflammatory Disease (MIS-C) CDC has developed and tested new materials to support healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children including factsheets for parents. NASN's COVID-19 Interactive Tools Can I Send My Student to School: Designed for school nurses to share with families, this interactive tool is based on CDC COVID-19 guidance and designed to guide families through assessing when their child should stay home from school. How to Manage Difficult Conversations: A quick micro-burst of learning, this interactive module teaches school nurses a simple formula to use to respond effectively to challenging conversations. COVID-19 and Students, Frequently Asked Questions: A resource designed to answer some questions families may have about students' health during COVID-19 and to support families with links to find additional resources. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Proposals Open for Type 1 Diabetes Camps Initiative School nurses know the value of diabetes camp for students with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The Eli Lilly and Company and the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Trust are collaborating to create inclusive opportunities for all children with T1D have access diabetes camps. Camps can make a proposal for funding to provide camperships to low-income youth with T1D, along with funds for capital improvement and adaptations to meet the physical requirements of COVID-19 of the camps. Make diabetes camps aware of this 3 three-year initiative that allows diabetes camps to request for funds. See the news release on this. The due date for proposals is October 15, 2021. Improving School Community and Student Health Resources and Tools to Support Emotional Well-Being The National Academies has developed a package of evidence-informed, web-based resources for teachers, parents, and other caregivers to help children and youth build cognitive-behavioral skills for coping with stress and anxiety. These resources are available in both English and Spanish. You can also register for a webinar on September 30 to learn more about how these tools were created. Self-Assessment Tool Helps Promote Equitable Access to School Meals The Nutrition and Obesity Policy Research and Evaluation Network (NOPREN) has created a Meal Distribution Communication checklist/assessment as a resource for school districts. This is a self-assessment tool to help schools and school districts communicate with families, students, community members, and service agencies about school meal distribution during planned and unplanned school closures. The tool promotes the use of strategies that help ensure equitable access to these critical meal programs. Training Helps Providers Deal With Eating Disorders in Pediatric Primary Care Settings School nurses are eligible for this free online webinar, “Screening, Symptom Recognition and Referral to Treatment for Eating Disorders in Pediatric Primary Care Settings” for those providers who treat children, adolescents, or young adults. The training was developed by the Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders (STRIPED), based at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Learn practical resources for making referrals for treatment when needed and earn 3 CE. Mark Your Calendar Introducing NASN’s New Lunch & Learn Series Parent & Teen Perspectives: Effective Communications & Advocacy Strategies for Adolescent Vaccination Do you want to learn how school nurses can implement effective communications and advocacy strategies to help support and improve adolescent vaccination in school environments? You will be able to create and implement effective communications strategies that empower students and build vaccine knowledge among students and their parents to enhance adolescent vaccination uptake after this series. In addition, two mothers (including a fellow nurse) who each lost their adolescent daughters to a vaccine-preventable disease (Meningitis B) will share best practices for increasing awareness and the uptake of vaccination. This course is part of the new NASN Lunch & Learn Series and is now available in the NASN Learning Center.
