Dear friends,
Our movement is growing.
Tomorrow, Friday, October 25, 15 young Canadians from across the country will file a lawsuit against the federal government of Canada for causing and allowing high levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contributing to dangerous climate change.
These youth are already being harmed because of the effects of climate change. They are taking their federal government to court for violating their constitutional rights to life, liberty, and security of the person under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and for failing to protect essential public trust resources. The youth plaintiffs also allege that their government’s conduct violates their right to equality, since young people are disproportionately affected by climate change.
The lawsuit calls on Canada to cease its activities that violate the youth plaintiffs’ rights and to prepare and implement a Climate Recovery Plan that reduces Canada’s GHG emissions in a manner consistent with the best available science.
The plaintiffs, from seven Canadian provinces and the Northwest Territories, are represented by the law firms of Arvay Finlay LLP and Tollefson Law Corporation, and are supported by the Pacific Centre for Environmental Law and Litigation, David Suzuki Foundation, and Our Children’s Trust.
Tune in to the press conference tomorrow on our Facebook page starting at 10:15 a.m. Pacific to hear directly from the plaintiffs, their attorneys, climate activist David Suzuki, and local youth climate strikers.
Thank you for your support as we continue to help young people around the world stand up for their rights and hold their governments accountable!
The team at Our Children’s Trust
P.S. A renowned youth climate activist from Sweden will be there too...
