Hi John,

The first week of writing (and drawing) my new newsletter has been everything I hoped it would be, largely because of people like you. Thank you to everyone who is coming along for the ride in this experiment (and it is an experiment because I’ve never tried anything like it before). When I asked why people are joining this community, the answers were inspiring.

Elizabeth, a writer and educator, shared she’s spent four years writing weekly with friends, having realized how such thoughtful, community-based writing and sharing is a powerful antidote to the sound bites and ginned-up outrage of social media.
Andy, a 29-year old, commented that he’s in search of “a sliver of hope about how we can actually REALIZE the progress that always seems to be just over the horizon, yet never in reach.”
Kay is tired of the mainstream media and cable news punditry that is all doom and gloom.
Mark expressed that I’m the wind beneath his social justice wings (wow!) and remarked on my drawings.
Rose is a 70-year old retired lawyer who shared that she’s making up for years spent yelling at the radio and TV, and keeping up the fight against hopelessness.

Even though the former guy is no longer in the Oval Office, the dark forces of authoritarianism and white supremacy are still very much with us — as are growing inequality and corruption. Of course, there’s no simple remedy. But surely part of the answer is to grow a community of people committed to spreading the truth and contributing to a better world.
