Americans for Justice in Palestine Action successfully organizes and mobilizes for Palestine Dear Email, Americans for Justice in Palestine Action (AJP Action) has successfully held its private training session and public plenaries this week for its national virtual Palestine Advocacy Days. This year, a record-breaking 750+ advocates registered from all 50 states. Monday’s session consisted of an intensive advocacy training session, which provided an overview of the legislative and policy issues to be addressed in meetings with Members of Congress this week. This session also trained attendees on communication strategies and substantive knowledge on the legislative asks. Tuesday’s session consisted of a Congressional plenary, entitled “Ending Business as Usual: Advancing Palestinian Rights in the Biden Era”, featuring keynote speeches from Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and Congressman André Carson, this year’s well-deserved recipients of the Champions of Palestinian Rights Awards. The session also featured remarks from Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Judy Chu, and Betty McCollum. This session demonstrated the growing support for Palestine in Congress, including a memorable quote from Congressman André Carson, speaking on the importance of consistency in human rights advocacy, who stated: “For far too long, our leaders have supported Israel without honoring our commitment to upholding human rights. As the world’s most powerful democracy, we have a responsibility to advocate for oppressed people around the world. But the cause to support our Palestinian brothers and sisters have often been silenced and even ignored. And I think that that’s changing - it’s clear that this is changing.” In addition, AJP Action held a rich and powerful activist roundtable conversation on “Ending US Complicity in Israel Apartheid” with Palestinian diplomat and scholar Hanan Ashrawi, Omar Shakir of Human Rights Watch, Taurean Webb of Harvard Divinity School, and Eva Borgwardt of If Not Now. Yesterday, advocates from all 50 states started meeting with their representatives and senators to lobby in support of Palestinian rights. |
