Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

This week marks the end of an era: by the end of this month, we will be leaving 1990 K St. NW after almost 4 years. Starting November 4, our new home will be at The Liz on 1377 R St. NW! While K Street was always set up as an interim location, the new space will be designed to house us more permanently in the years to come. We are truly sad to leave the Golden Triangle, but we are even more excited to become an active part of the lively community in our new neighborhood. We'd like to thank each and every one of you for visiting us in the past four years, and we hope that we can welcome you as guests again at our new location! Don't miss the first opportunity to stop by and join us for our grand opening party on November 6.

All Fall 2019 Intensive and Standard German classes will continue to take place at our 1990 K St. NW location through late November. Beginning in December 2019, all German classes and exams will take place at our new location at 1377 R St. NW.

Programming continues with the Provenance Research Exchange Program (PREP), children's author Antje Damm for Kids Euro Festival, and a visit from German author Theresia Enzensberger. And don't forget to buy your tickets for the 27th edition of Film|Neu, Washington's annual festival with new films from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Check out some of this year's characters below!

Film|Neu 2019: Meet the Characters!

Oliver is a cutthroat banker who must adjust to his new life after becoming paralyzed from the waist down. Determined to retrieve his dirty money from a Swiss bank and smuggle it back over the German border, he embarks on a wild journey to Zurich – with all of his new friends at the group home in tow.

Georg is a homebody and carpenter who remained in his childhood home to care for his ailing father, all while his hotshot brother traveled the world as a businessman. Is it finally his own turn to live it up?

Mareile is a television actress whose character has just been killed off to make room for a younger actress, and now she must find a new direction for her career – landing a role as the thirteen-year-old Joan of Arc in a community theater production.

Stefan is a widower and father of two, struggling to keep his head above water while coping with his grief and worrying about his daughters' futures. One is incorrigibly quirky, the other is terminally ill. With so much misfortune in life, how can he become happy again?

Panel Discussions | Friday, October 25 - Saturday, October 26

Provenance Research Exchange Program (PREP) in Washington, DC

The German/American Provenance Research Exchange Program (PREP) brings together, for the first time, museum professionals from both sides of the Atlantic who specialize in World War II-era provenance projects for a three-year, systematic exchange. The program expands and elaborates on the methods and practices with which both countries have thus far approached the issues pertaining to Holocaust-era art looting. PREP is also widening the scope of WWII-era provenance research, which to date has given priority to painting, sculpture, and Judaica, by including Asian art, decorative arts, and works on paper. RSVP to the panel discussions this Friday and Saturday.

Writing Workshop for Children | Saturday, November 9, 1:00 pm

Kids Euro Festival: "The Visitor" by Antje Damm

In this year's edition of Kids Euro, children's author Antje Damm hosts a writing workshop for children. The workshop involves taking a look at the picture book The Visitor (Der Besuch), made of cardboard, in which shy Elise meets Emil - a curious little boy who brings color into her life. How does a book like this come about? How long does it take, who's working on it? The Visitor is among the 2018 New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Books Winners.

Washington Jewish Film Festival: Back to the Fatherland (2017), dir. Kat Rohrer, Gil Levanon

Gil and Kat have been friends since college. Gil is from Israel, Kat from Austria; Gil is the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Kat the granddaughter of a Nazi officer. They have been friends for over a decade. Through them we meet other young men and women whose grandparents were murdered or persecuted during the war. What’s interesting is that many have decided to move back to the Fatherland, a choice that their families disagree with. Why would they do this? This revealing documentary (originally screened at Washington Jewish Film Festival 2018) explores the challenges and opportunities for reconciliation and understanding between the generations on both sides of the Shoah.

Presented in cooperation with the Edlavitch Jewish Community Center of Washington, DC.
