Friend,
Donald Trump was the most openly corrupt presidential candidate of our lifetime.
During the 2016 election, he was caught on tape bragging about sexually assaulting women. He was caught red-handed exploiting his private foundation. He invited foreign interference into the election.
So how on Earth did he win?
One big factor was the corporate media's misguided obsession with false notions of "balance" and the fear of being called "liberal." Every hour of coverage of Trump scandals was countered with an hour-plus of negative coverage about Democrats. In fact, the New York Times wrote more about Clinton's emails than all of Trump's scandals combined.
By Election Day, voters thought "both sides" were equally bad—and this year, it's happening all over again.
Our democracy is in crisis, and we're coming up on the most important election in our lifetime.
It's vital that our media be willing to uncover the real stories—not false equivalencies. The corporate media, in their never-ending quest to generate more clicks, more advertising revenue, and more money for their profit-seeking investors, can't be trusted to do any better in 2020 than they did in 2016.
That's why Common Dreams matters. We don't take a single dollar from corporate advertisers, and we're not trying to make a profit for investors. We're an independent, nonprofit news outlet, and we have the backbone to uncover the real stories and report the facts.
But we can only do it with your support. Because we don't take corporate money, we rely on readers like you to help fund our work. Our Fall Campaign is underway, but we have a long road to go to hit our must-reach goal.
Will you help Common Dreams keep reporting the facts by donating?
