Subject: I lost in 2020. Here's why
On November 3, 2020, I lost my re-election bid for Indiana's 5th congressional district. Here's how it happened.
When I started this race, I knew it would be an uphill battle. I knew there would be fierce debate over the issues and the best policies for Indiana's children and families. And I knew that I would have to defend my record.
What I did not know, John, was just how far Republicans were willing to go to win.
Once the attack ads funded by Republican PACs started hitting airwaves, I was shocked by the utter fabrications and complete disregard for the truth on display.
Among their ridiculous lies, they claimed I hadn't paid my property taxes (false) and that I lived in a big fancy mansion funded by the Chinese. That was absolutely false too, although my neighbors still joke about it.
These claims were quickly debunked by fact-checkers, but the damage was already done.
We came so close to victory. Here in the rustbelt, you feel how high the stakes truly are. Families desperately need champions in Congress who are empowered to take action and help people get back on their feet by expanding economic opportunities, access to affordable health care, and so much more.
We all need to put skin in the game and continue the fight for families on the front line. While I lost my race, I knew that I had to work even harder to make sure something like this never happened again. That's when Shield PAC called.
