John, I hope you saw this and can take action before the end of the day:
John, let me be brief but urgent: our actions in the coming weeks will make all the difference for the future of our democracy.
That’s because right now is likely the best chance we’ll have for years to pass the Freedom to Vote Act -- which is newly moving through the Senate. And you are a critical part of getting it over the finish line.
This bill would change far more than just fixing voter suppression and gerrymandering, or blocking the dangerous and shocking attempts at election sabotage we’re seeing in multiple states -- although doing so is of the utmost importance.
Just think about how different the current debate over infrastructure would be if lobbyists and Big Money special interests weren’t calling the shots in the legislative process.
Just think about what we could accomplish if our leaders had the courage to stop Mitch McConnell’s filibuster from shutting down our democracy.
John, the battle you and I are fighting right now to pass the Freedom to Vote Act could make all the difference.
How? You see, this bill isn’t just our best defense against the far-right’s all-out war on our democracy. It’s also our single best vehicle to end Mitch McConnell’s filibuster -- so our government can actually get things done for the American people.
I’m pleased to report that we now have a final, negotiated bill -- with overwhelming support from voters of all parties and buy-in from key senators like Joe Manchin and other moderates in the Senate.
That’s why tomorrow, we’re kicking off an intense, down-to-the-wire People-Powered Mobilization to push the Freedom to Vote Act all the way to President Biden’s desk. Thousands of calls to key senators, events across the country, and a media and public-facing push to show every American just how high the stakes are.
And, to put it bluntly and urgently -- I’m writing to you today, John, because I need your help to fund this critical effort. I know you are probably getting a lot of messages from a lot of worthy causes right about now -- but I sincerely hope that you are able to chip in to support this People-Powered Mobilization today.
Here’s why: we can’t make progress on any of the issues that matter to you and me if the democratic process is broken. That’s why I hope you will do your part today -- so we can count you on the list of active supporters of the Freedom to Vote Act as we launch our mobilization on October 1.
Our democracy is fundamentally important, but dangerously fragile -- and it takes the dedicated action of every generation, including ours, to defend it for the next one.
