Dear John,
The impacts of the Government’s bungled Brexit deal are
now being felt more acutely than ever by Britons struggling to access
fuel.
Brexit didn’t create fuel
shortages, and it is not solely responsible for UK shortages of HGV
drivers (who would usually take fuel from refineries to the
forecourts).
But Brexit, and our Government’s
serious failure to plan, have made these problems
worse.
Here are some facts for
you:
The British people aren’t wrong.
The end of free movement made it harder for drivers from EU countries
to take driving jobs in the UK and has caused a mass exodus of many EU HGV drivers.
Unemployed Brits can’t immediately
fill the roles either - HGV driving requires significant training, as
well as high levels of resilience. It’s a skilled occupation but the
Government is acting like it’s quick and easy to throw together
thousands of UK-grown HGV drivers at short notice.
The Government has failed to
recognise these facts for years. It has repeatedly ignored the Road
Haulage Association’s warnings of an impending crisis.
Years of undervaluing industry
workers and failing to improve conditions has led us to this place -
and for that lack of foresight we once again have the Government to
blame.
If you’re frustrated with the
Government’s short-termism and self-destruction, write or message your
MP today as part of our campaign for better trading standards and
conditions. It will take just two minutes for you to generate a
bespoke message using our bespoke Hey-MP tool.
Best wishes,
Cary Mitchell,
