Dear John
It's two weeks until Challenge Poverty Week in England and Wales (11–17 October)! Church Action on Poverty is excited to be coordinating events being organised by inspiring organisations throughout both countries. Please spread the word, and join in a local event if you can – or join one of the many evebnts that are still taking place online.
Sign up now!
We're particularly excited about these events, which are being organised by Church Action on Poverty's own partners and programmes. Click the name of an event to find out more and book your place:
Hear from participants and researchers as they launch the Navigating Storms report, which discovers the truth about what leaves people at risk of not being able to access enough, suitable, quality food, and what might be done to improve things.
People within the network of Self-Reliant Groups supported by Church Action on Poverty have produced Our Cookery Book, which is full of recipes written by SRG members, with an explanation of why they have chosen their recipes, and also many quotes from group members about why the Self-Reliant Group movement is important to them. Join the SRG members to hear more about the book, the recipes, and SRGs – and support SRGs by buying your own copy!
Hear from our partners at the 'Life on the Breadline' team about what they learned during their three-year research programme with UK churches.
These events also promise to be fascinating:
A launch event at Methodist Central Hall will host "The Greater Manchester Big Poverty Conversation" which will provide an opportunity for citizens from across Greater Manchester to talk and hear about lived experiences of poverty and the challenges facing individuals and communities post-Covid.
Based on learning from Scotland's 'A Menu for Change' project, Dudley's 'Worrying About Money?' leaflet has been co-designed to help people experiencing financial insecurity, and those supporting them, to easily identify and access appropriate financial support and advice. By helping people access any existing financial entitlements and advice on income maximisation, the hope is to reduce the need for emergency food aid.
Join the North East Child Poverty Commission and Thrive Teesside for this online, regional Challenge Poverty Week event on taking a rights-based approach – through the Socioeconomic Duty – to tackling poverty.
Join the Bevan Foundation in Challenge Poverty Week for a lively debate on what more can be done to solve poverty in Wales.
Best wishes
Liam Purcell
