It’s Nancy Takano again -- Mark's mom! I hope you don’t mind me reaching out, I just wanted to tell you something really important about Mark’s campaign.
I remember when Mark first ran for Congress. It was really hard for a lot of deeply personal reasons...
Most people aren't aware of this, but his Republican opponent ran ads and sent mail that outed Mark as gay during the campaign before he had even come out publicly. He ended up losing that ultra-competitive race by just 519 votes.
As a mother, I was furious and heartbroken for my son, whom I love unconditionally.
But I was so proud that Mark didn’t let bigoted attacks stop him -- he kept going. I’m not really surprised though -- our family has been through a lot and we’ve always persevered.
In fact, when I was young, my family and I were forced from our homes and unjustly interned in Japanese American internment camp. We lost everything and had to start over.
But now, we’re a family who is living the American Dream. And my son, Mark, after 20 years of teaching, did in the end become a U.S. Congressman.
I’m proud to live in this country -- but the current MAGA Republicans attacking Mark want us to go back to a time of bigotry just like the kind Mark faced in his first campaign, and racism just like the kind that put me and my family in a Japanese American internment camp.
I know you're probably getting a lot of emails, but I hope you'll do me a favor now:
Mark tells me that his campaign has a huge end-of-quarter fundraising deadline tomorrow -- it's required by law -- and they still need to raise $2,542!
But together, we can stand up and fight back against their hateful agenda. I'm so proud of my son and I know he's fighting so hard for working families and for progressive policies in Congress.
