Congress is nearing a vote on the most ambitious climate plan in American history. This is our chance to drastically reduce carbon emissions, invest in communities harmed by environmental racism, and secure clean air and water for everyone — all while creating millions of jobs.

We need these jobs to jumpstart the economy and get people back to work. But because of Big Oil lobbyists, we’re in danger of losing many of these new jobs — meaning thousands of families will lose their chance to start again after the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the coming days, Congress is expected to vote on the Build Back Better Act — the most important climate legislation in a generation.

I cannot stress enough how important this vote is — millions of potential good-paying jobs for builders, roofers, pipefitters, engineers, electricians, and others to rebuild Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, transition to clean electricity, and retrofit and weatherize our homes are on the table.

The Build Back Better Act could revolutionize our entire economy and save taxpayers BILLIONS in the long run. By transitioning away from dirty fossil fuels and making our buildings more energy-efficient, we can spend less on pollution- and climate-related costs and damages. That could mean fewer medical bills treating respiratory illnesses like asthma, fewer house repairs caused by extreme weather events like hurricanes and floods, fewer heat waves that destroy entire crops, and less money spent on utilities every month.

Congress is also working on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal, which will help rebuild the nation’s crumbling infrastructure. To meet the needs of the moment, we need the Build Back Better Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal to pass together.

Now is the time to sound the alarm and fight. If we don’t secure these jobs, we lose our best chance at restoring our infrastructure and protecting our planet, as well as benefits like:

500,000 electric vehicle charging stations along existing or new highways
50 million electric vehicles
4 million upgraded, energy efficient buildings
2 million weatherized homes
Millions of solar panels and tens of thousands of wind turbines
Thousand of miles of lead pipes removed to deliver clean water to everyone

We can’t watch from the sidelines and allow wealthy fossil fuel industry CEOs to hijack the momentum of the entire grassroots environmental movement and rip new clean energy jobs away from families. It is critical that we push back, because only together can we get our economy back on track and tackle the climate crisis.
