Dear People For Member,

We wouldn’t be sending you so many emails if there wasn’t so much riding
on the outcome of the Virginia election – which is now less than five
weeks away.

If far-right Republican Glenn Youngkin manages to pull off a win over
Terry McAuliffe, it won’t just be a disaster for the people of Virginia –
who will be stuck with a Trump-endorsed governor, taking them backwards on
so many issues.

It will also likely spell disaster for the progressive reforms that,
together, we’ve fought so hard for: protections for voting rights,
workers’ rights, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ equality and more ... not to
mention popular progressive agendas on the economy, the environment, and
health care.

We’ve seen this pattern before: the national media will spin a McAuliffe
loss into a wholesale repudiation of popular Democratic policies. Then, a
vicious cycle of caution and timidity will set in – empowering Mitch
McConnell to double down on his obstruction and dissuading conservative
Democrats from supporting the reforms we need.

Here at People For, we’ve designed our biggest Virginia electoral program
ever, focused on turning out groups that are traditionally
under-represented in the voting population. And a generous major donor has
agreed to triple-match all donations made before October 1 – but we can’t
pull off this program without your help.

triple-matched contribution today to help keep Virginia blue?



Apart from the national implications of the race, as a People For member,
you know what else is at stake:

* Keeping Democrats in the governor’s office and the legislative
majority means that we have a chance to make Virginia the final state
needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
* If far-right Republicans win the governorship and take over the House,
they'll be further along in their efforts to gerrymander this critical
bellwether state’s legislative districts.
* Virginia is also one of our top target states to join the National
Popular Vote Compact, which would effectively end the racist and
anti-democratic Electoral College – but if the Far Right takes control
of the state government, there’s zero chance of progress on that
front.

Early voting has already begun in Virginia, and the dire consequences of
electing a Trump-endorsed, far-right extremist just cannot be overstated.
