** Indigenous Leadership is Essential in Preparation for COP26

In the run-up to the upcoming 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties in Glasgow, Scotland, Cultural Survival spoke with Frank Ettawageshik (Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians), Executive Director of the United Tribes of Michigan and President of Association on American Indian Affairs, who has been involved in international Indigenous rights advocacy for decades to learn more about Indigenous leadership and their participation at the conferences. ** Violence Against Human Rights Defenders in Colombia Continues with Attack on Beatriz Cano and César Galarza

More than 26 human rights defenders have been murdered in Cauca, Colombia, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Reporters Without Borders, Colombia currently ranks 134 out of 180 countries on the 2021 World Press Freedom Index. Read more. ([link removed])

** Violence Against Human Rights Defenders in Colombia Continues with the Murder of Beatriz Cano and César Galarza

This story map ([link removed]) created by The Human Rights Investigations Lab for the Americas and Cultural Survival provides a brief overview of the devastating situation in Colombia, based on the names of Indigenous defenders included in Cultural Survival's widely read 2019 "In Memoriam" report profiling 28 Indigenous defenders. This addendum report provides an update to a section of that 2019 report on Colombian defenders, expanding on their important contributions for justice. We honor the legacies of these Colombian defenders and add our voice to the global calls to hold perpetrators accountable for their tragic deaths.

** Guatemalan Public Ministry Initiates Excavation Proceedings in Tzanabaj in Search 116 Children Massacred During Civil War

The prosecutor's office for the human rights section of the Guatemalan Public Ministry recently announced the beginning of excavation proceedings of 116 Maya K’iche’ children massacred during the Civil War in Canton Tzanabaj, formerly Chiul in the Cunen municipality of the Quiche department. ** Second Indigenous Women’s March Takes Place in Brasilia

"We want peace in our territories," shouted Indigenous women marchers in Brazil’s capital city of Brasilia on September 7-11, 2021. For the second time, Indigenous women from all over the country, representing their biomes and families, organized the Indigenous Women’s March in the capital city Brasília. Read more. ** Standing Our Ground - A Story Of A Significant Battle ([link removed])

Diana Morat from Eldos FM interviews Tauriq Jenkins on the saga of Amazon.com who wants to set up shop in Cape Town, South Africa. First Nations have a strong claim to this land because in 1510 it was the site of the first battle between the Khoi and European colonizers - in this instance the Portuguese Viceroy of India, Francisco d'Almeida.

On September 29, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste reduction is commemorated to ensure that we all do our best to preserve food, and to respect the effort that goes into ensuring that it ends up on our tables, and to make sure that we do not take it for granted. Faced with an acute food crisis due to the impacts of forced isolation during COVID-19 pandemic, the response of the Nalunega and Wissubwala communities in the Gunayala region was to turn to their traditional, sustainable, Gunadule agricultural practices. ** Radio Sumaq Kawsay, Peru
------------------------------------------------------------

Utilizing the existing radio infrastructure in Lares, Radio Sumaq Kawsay reaches all 23 communities in the district. These rural communities still have limited access to phone service and no internet; thus, radio remains the primary means of communication in the area and nearly all 6,000 residents tune in to listen to radio programming for at least a few hours each day.
