Are you ready to elect the leaders our democracy so badly needs?
Today, we’re thrilled to announce our next round of candidate endorsements and NALAF Champions in 2021! These seven amazing candidates are based in Georgia, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Washington—key states where we have seen everything from Republicans acting aggressively [[link removed]] to restrict voting rights and overhaul elections to the dawn of a new political era in Boston, where Michelle Wu or Annissa Essaibi George [[link removed]] will soon become the city’s first woman of color mayor (both former NALAF endorsees). Not only is this slate of candidates committed to creating a democracy that represents and works for everyone, but they’re ready now to change their communities for the better.
Let’s meet our final six endorsed candidates and NALAF Champion!

Rogelio Arcila [[link removed]] is a second generation Mexican American who has been a community organizer with unions and progressive candidates and is a leader in the police reform movement in Atlanta. He’s running on a platform of giving representation to the marginalized communities in his district, which includes working-class and immigrant voices. If elected, Rogelio will be first Latino on the Atlanta City Council.
Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui [[link removed]] is a first generation Indian and Pakistani American who currently serves as the mayor of Cambridge. As the youngest mayor of Cambridge and the first Muslim mayor of any city or municipality in Massachusetts, she has already championed solutions around affordable housing, educational equity, and poverty reduction. Mayor Siddiqui recently spearheaded the first mayor-led guaranteed income project in New England, Cambridge RISE, and she’s the first mayor to set aside a budget for language needs to make government more accessible to immigrant communities.
Cambridge City Councilor Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler [[link removed]] is a second generation Asian American and 2019 NALAF endorsee who won a historic election in 2019, becoming the first Indian American Cambridge City Councilor as well as the youngest Councilmember. In his first term, he’s been working to implement affordable housing with pathways to homeownership for low-income and New American families as the Co-Chair of the Housing Committee and establish fare-free bus programs as the Chair of the Transportation and Public Utilities Committee.
Nicola Williams [[link removed]] is a first generation Jamaican American, 25-year small business owner in Cambridge, and community activist who serves on the board of directors of five Cambridge nonprofit organizations. She’s committed to ensuring a livable and sustainable Cambridge, closing the racial student achievement gap, and giving citizens the opportunity to own a home they can afford, among other things.
Cambridge City Councilor Quinton Zondervan [[link removed]] is a first generation Surinamese American and experienced organizer who is running for his third term on the Cambridge City Council. In office, he has been focused on improving racial, social, economic, and environmental justice through legislation that centers the most vulnerable Cambridge residents.
Imran Malik [[link removed]] is a first generation Pakistani American and New American Leaders alum who has been a community leader in Dublin, Ohio, for the past 25 years. He’s running for school board because he wants to improve the experience of all children in Dublin. He wants to be a voice for representation on the school board where there are no people of color currently serving.
Nazir Harb Michel [[link removed]] is a first generation Mexican and Lebanese American, public affairs expert, and a representative of the King County Democrats who is running for Sammamish City Council, Position 3. He has a strong vision for the community, which includes addressing the increasing racial tension in Sammamish, and making the city more livable by improving public transportation, bike lanes, and creating more open space for people to interact.
