The legislature let us down this year.

Friend,

California elected a Democratic supermajority in the state legislature last November, setting up a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fulfill progressive values we’ve been fighting for.

And then our legislature completely squandered that opportunity, bowing to corporations and special interests instead of delivering on critical policies that we voted them in for.

During the past session, only two of Courage Calfornia's progressive priority bills made it to the governor’s desk.(1) Campaign-finance reform, single-payer health care, and a wealth tax never even made it out of committee.(2)

With the next election season around the corner, we need to make sure that constituents know how their legislators let them down so that they can hold them accountable and make informed choices at the ballot box. Courage California is preparing our 2022 Courage Score to call out the representatives who haven’t been fulfilling their promises, and we need to be prepared to advertise it as widely as possible.

Will you chip in $5 to hold our representatives accountable to our progressive values?

We could not be more disappointed in California’s legislature this year.

There is no meaningful Republican obstruction, like what other states deal with. The only reason our legislature is holding up progressive bills is because too many Democrats are beholden to their corporate and special interest donors.

That’s why bills such as AB 4, which expands Medi-Cal, and AB 1041, which allowed greater sick leave policies, failed to come up for a vote.(3) The California Dream Alliance, a coalition of 70 progressive partners, listed 29 legislative priorities this year -- and only eight passed.

Corporate-backed Democrats are blocking our bills from being heard, and it’s inexcusable.

Courage California’s Courage Score is the state’s leading report card on how our legislators are fulfilling their promises -- or not. We look at how legislators vote on bills, who donates to them, and how well legislators are representing the districts who voted them into office. We give constituents the information they need to hold their representatives accountable, and we need your help to spread the word far and wide.

Will you help fund advertisements to let constituents know how their representatives are doing?

Yours in the fight for democracy,

Irene, along with Angela, Annie, Caitlin, Jay, Lindsay, LisaMarie, Molly, Raquel, and Scottie (the Courage team)
