Right now, millions of chickens like her are struggling just to breathe. Selectively bred to grow at an unnatural pace, their swollen bodies constantly throb with pain. Their bones grow weak, causing them to topple over onto the feces-soaked floor.Â
Tragically, this is the everyday reality for fast-growth chickens who are raised on factory farms. And at the center of their exploitation lies corporate greed.Â
The Humane League and citizen investigators teamed up to expose the truth in a new investigative report. And we’re calling on top supermarkets to stop supporting this animal abuse.
The evidence we found is widespread and damning. We discovered that top grocery retailers are selling chicken meat with white striping, a disease that is indicative of rapid growth and inherent cruelty. In other words: These retailers are profiting from undeniable, extreme suffering.
Fast-growth chickens balloon to more than double their natural size, causing premature death, deformities, and diseases like white striping.Â
Our movement for chickens has already inspired a few major retailers to make meaningful welfare commitments, including Whole Foods, Kroger, Sprouts, Giant Eagle, and Natural Grocers. These brands saw demands for change bubbling up from the public and chose to act. Unfortunately, many other big brands have stayed silent.
It takes less than a minute to send a powerful message on behalf of these vulnerable animals.
