Timely Call to Action: Tell Federal Lawmakers by 9/29 to Prioritize Affordable Housing NOW

NPH and coalition partners have organized a critical call to action, calling on Speaker Pelosi and Senators Feinstein and Padilla to invest in more affordable housing solutions and rental assistance for Bay Area communities and the country by prioritizing the most critical provisions of the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA) and the HUD budget expansion in the final budget reconciliation package of President Biden’s Build Back Better Plan.

These provisions will ensure that more affordable homes are built and more renters have access to rental assistance, in CA and across the nation. These investments are key to housing justice, COVID-19 recovery, and our communities' health and stability. Add your name by 3:00PM today!

Help California Avert an Eviction Cliff

Checklist of 8 essential actions

California's Eviction Moratorium ends after September 30, but it won't be too late to help keep our neighbors housed. The Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative (BARHII) has convened an array of experts across the Bay Area to develop Eight Essential Actions for the Bay Area: Preparing for the COVID-19 Eviction and Foreclosure Cliff. Nearly 50 Bay Area organizations have signed on to these 8 Essential Actions to avert the eviction cliff and a wave of homelessness.

Please share these 8 Essential Actions with your networks, and if possible, share with your mayor, councilmember, county supervisor, and/or county courthouse.

United Way + Tenants Together Team Up to Help Protect Tenants

United Way California, United Way Bay Area, and Tenants Together have teamed up to formulate five statewide recommendations to protect tenants, addressed to Governor Newsom, Senator Atkins, and Assemblymember/Speaker Rendon. NPH is proud to have signed on to these recommendations, along with dozens of other organizations who care about housing justice. Please share these recommendations with your networks!

Earlier this month, the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) launched the California Housing Accelerator, a $1.75 billion fund included in the state budget for stalled HCD projects that will help produce more than 7,000 new units of affordable housing throughout the state.

This investment will finance shovel-ready affordable homes so that construction can begin immediately.

In the kick off event for the Accelerator hosted by HCD and MidPen, our Executive Director Amie Fishman noted that the initiative “is a critical step toward the community transformation we are striving for, where no one is homeless. Where everyone belongs.” Read the full quote and more via Mercury News.

The Shift the Bay Initiative, a coalition-driven initiative to advance housing and racial justice in the Bay Area, is offering two upcoming learning opportunities:

  • Opinion Pieces (op-eds, LTEs, ed board memos), Wednesday, October 13 (1pm-3pm)
Join us with M+R Communications to explore: Do you know when you should write each kind of opinion piece? What are the elements and structure of a good op-ed? How can you increase your chances of it being published? And once you're done drafting, where and how do you submit it to media outlets?

  • Narrative Strategy & You, Wednesday, October 20 (12pm - 2pm)
In this virtual workshop with two options to attend, renowned national expert (and long-time Shift the Bay partner) Dr. Tiffany Manuel and her CaseMade colleagues will guide participants through an interactive workshop, examining specific campaign examples, reviewing big picture guidance that we can all organize under, and facilitating constructive peer learning.

Stay on top of all the upcoming Shift the Bay news and events by signing up for the Shift the Bay mailing list.
