Progressives need to stand firm against corporate power.

Dear Friend,

Congress is in crisis.

Time is running out to pass a budget. The infrastructure bill that was agreed on in August is still waiting for a vote. The Build Back Better plan to address climate change, provide paid family leave, and expand Medicare is slipping away.

Joe Manchin could shift the tide, but he cares more about defeating a progressive agenda than the well-being of the American people. Manchin and a small group of right-wing Democrats, all backed by corporate cash, are standing in the way of passing this critical legislation, threatening to block the president’s agenda and siding with Mitch McConnell over their own party.

Demand Progress is rallying grassroots pressure on Congress to stand up to Manchin and work for the American people, not corporate interests. Will you donate to our emergency campaign?

Corporate America is using right-wing Democrats like Manchin and Sinema to undermine the agenda that President Biden and other Democrats ran on in 2020: universal childcare, Medicare expansion, cheaper prescription drugs, and bold action to tackle the climate crisis.

It’s no surprise that Mitch McConnell has fought this at every turn. But now Manchin and a tiny group of renegade Democrats in the House are trying to tank the reconciliation bill as well. Manchin is even giving talks at corporations like Proctor & Gamble, saying that he wants to “pause” the $3.5 trillion package until next year.1

The planet isn’t going to pause on getting warmer. Insurance companies aren’t going to pause in jacking up premiums and copays. Corporations aren’t going to pause on forcing unpaid medical leave on mothers.

We can’t afford Joe Manchin’s “pause.” We need Congress and President Biden to stand strong on passing the $3.5 trillion budget bill, and they need to take Manchin with them. Demand Progress members have sent tens of thousands of messages urging Congress to be bold on the climate and pass this progressive agenda. It’s had an impact, and now we need to continue the campaign into these crucial final days before the key votes.
