September 2021 Bring America Home NOW! Decades of incremental change have not resolved homelessness. Join us here in calling for a permanent end to homelessness!
After the Supreme Court ruled that the CDC moratorium, or ban, on evictions during the pandemic could be lifted about a month ago, eviction courts and landlords have swung into action to evict potentially millions of renters.
There has been millions in emergency rental assistance given to communities, but implementation and spending of that assistance has been slow. (Read about how Washington, DC has been fairing in ensuring rental assistance makes it to those in need.)
Please share widely this state-by-state list of resources for renters needing assistance
Staff Spotlight: Caitlyn Cobb
Caitlyn Cobb is a writer, poet, singer-songwriter, mother, community and social media activist, and the current Coordinator of Public Education for NCH. As a young adult, Caitlyn experienced a 5-year-long stretch of near-uninterrupted homelessness. One of her proudest moments (second only to becoming a mother) was obtaining her Associates Degree in paralegal studies from Anne Arundel Community College in August 2016. From 2016 – 2020, Caitlyn was the Social Media Director for the Transformative Justice Coalition, and Special Assistant to its President and Founder, Barbara Arnwine. While at TJC, Caitlyn was selected by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to attend and participate in their week-long “Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation” summit, led Gen Z Millennial Votes Matter Trainings, and assisted with TJC’s voting rights and policy advocacy activities.
In 2020, Caitlyn was a guest on Barbara Arnwine’s “Igniting Change” radio show, along with Donald Whitehead, now Executive Director of NCH. As a guest on Igniting Change, as well as on panels at otherevents, Caitlyn shed light on the issue of homelessness by sharing her own stories of what it was like being a Black woman who was homeless for the majority of five years. Caitlyn has spoken about what should be done differently to address not only the crisis of homelessness (such as people-focused shelters rather than shelter-focused shelters) but also, as she puts it, the “homeless mindset”, which she defines as "the psychological issues and deep-seeded PTSD that develops from any prolonged period of homelessness". Caitlyn served on the NCH Board of Directors for close to a year before stepping down to join staff as the Coordinator of Public Education in August 2021.
Caitlyn plans to create several nonprofit programs:
Caitlyn is also writing a series of books bringing awareness to the realities of homelessness. Her platform for all her dreams and work is simple: since Napoleon said “Ability is nothing without opportunity”, why not give people every opportunity to succeed? There is so much potential in the world that goes unnoticed because people are never given the chance and no one looks inside the shelters, the streets, the parks, the tents, and on the couches where people are.
Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week NCH is planning to post stories from individuals with lived experience on each day of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. The speakers will focus on racial equity, civil rights, housing, income, education and training, and healthcare.
We would love for you to join us on the NCH YouTube channel. We also would be interested in partnering with local social service providers or local Coalitions to distribute items for those who do not use typically go into shelter.
Also, if you are interested in receiving back-packs that local college students put together please contact Caitlyn Cobb at NCH at [email protected]
National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day
NCH collaborates with the National Health Care for the Homeless Council to commemorate Homeless Persons' Memorial Day. This is a day to remember those who have passed away over the last year. The target is to host a candlelight vigil on December 21, the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year. There is nice tool kit here to give some pointers for constructing a local memorial day. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions or would like your local memorial day publicized by NCH.
Submit Your Input to USICH The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) is seeking input on its Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness. USICH has expressed its commitment that this plan will be guided by equity and evidence.

Notice of Funding Announced
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is making $2.656 billion in FY 2021 Continuum of Care Program (CoC) competitive funding available to homeless services organizations across the country for supportive services and housing programs for people experiencing homelessness. Read HUD’s Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO).

VOTE! Local elections are coming up! Click below to check your registration status, or look up who is running for office in your community. Local elections (state, city, county) are just as important, if not more so, than the presidential or congressional elections. Local elected leaders can decide how quickly emergency funds are dispersed in your community. They also decide on zoning issues that greatly affect how much affordable housing is available in your city.
Save the Date: October 30, 2021 NCH will be holding a training for people who have been unhoused to become speakers for NCH's Faces of Homelessness Speakers' Bureau. RSVP via phone at 202-462-4822 x703, or email [email protected].
November 6-7, 2021 NCH will be holding a (Virtual) National Leadership Summit. The Summit is specifically intended for advocates who are currently, or who have experienced homelessness.
November 7, 2021 In support of the Bring America Home NOW! campaign, John Leguizamo will headline a Comedy show at the former Jackie Robinson YMCA in Harlem, New York City. We hope to be able to offer a virtual viewing option, as well as in-person tickets for those who have received their full COVID vaccination.
