At a time when science has been put to the test, British-led efforts during the pandemic have given the nation inspiration and a sense of pride.

Polling this month by YouGov shows that 76% of Brits felt most proud about UK-led science – this is more so than with culture, sport, manufacturing, and engineering.

While the central role played by the University of Oxford and the NHS in developing COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, that’s not all British-led science has contributed to the world in recent years.

A new report released today sets out how British-led science is playing a critical role in the fight against malaria.

Over 20 years 7.6 million lives have been saved and 1.5 billion cases of malaria prevented for which UK Government funding has been critical. However, in recent years progress has plateaued due to stalled funding and emerging threats – this could wipe out recent gains against the disease.

British science is in a unique position to play a leading role in the fight against one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases – with the potential to save 2 million additional lives in the process and end it within a generation.
