This week, we are fighting in Congress to fund the government, avoid a shutdown, and raise the debt ceiling. Let me be clear: We are not going to let a government shutdown happen, and we are going to pay our bills. But the fact that half of my colleagues seem willing to play "chicken" with the American economy underscores the urgent need for a stronger, more expansive Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate.

The GOP’s refusal to raise the debt limit is not only unwise -- if they got their way, defaulting on our debts could harm our economy, unsteady the stock market, and spike interest rates for decades to come -- but it's also hypocritical, considering many of our debts are from bipartisan legislation that they backed, like COVID relief, or even from their own 2017 GOP tax cut.

I'm focused every single day in the Senate on working with my colleagues, both Democratic and Republican, to enact legislation that's going to help families in Virginia and across the country access a strong, bright future. But we can’t continue to govern this way, with GOP Senators blocking progress at every turn. We've got to expand our Democratic majority and vote out those who simply won't do their jobs.
