Dear John,
Yesterday, the Senate voted down House-passed legislation that would have prevented a government shutdown on October 1.
With so many other legislative priorities being debated in Washington, DC this week, some Americans may be unaware that our government continues to barrel toward a dangerous shutdown at midnight on September 30. And a government default, which would be disastrous for our economy and impact the benefits of millions of older Americans, also looms ahead — unless Congress acts ASAP.
That’s why I urge you to help us put maximum pressure on members of Congress to take immediate action to avoid a government shutdown on October 1 and prevent a catastrophic default on our financial obligations by signing our Emergency Petition to Congress today!
If our government shuts down on October 1 because lawmakers refuse to uphold their responsibility to fund the government, it will have a direct impact on services relied on by millions of older Americans. All of the Social Security Administration’s consumer operations would be compromised. The same would go for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living and the Centers for Medicare Services.
And if Congress fails to raise the debt limit in time, not only would incalculable damage be inflicted on our economy and U.S. jobs, but 65 million Americans could experience a delay of several weeks or in a month to receiving their benefits!
With just hours left before dire consequences to our economy and your benefits kick in, please sign our Emergency Petition to Congress today urging lawmakers to do their jobs: Pass legislation to keep the government open and suspend or raise the debt ceiling immediately!
Sincerely,
|
