Friend,
I’m a little more than 48 hours away from our biggest fundraising deadline of the year so far: our end-of-quarter – and public – FEC reporting deadline. Unfortunately, after just hanging up with my finance director, I’ve learned we’re still $8,500 short of our goal.
I know you’ll forgive my urgency. As an engaged supporter, you understand how important this campaign is with Senate control on the line. So let me be clear: We cannot fall short of goals ahead of public reporting deadlines like this. If we do – if the political pundits and GOP see we’ve fallen behind, they will take that as a clear-cut sign of vulnerability and pile on the resources to defeat me.
So Friend, I’m humbly asking you to make a contribution so I can meet my goal before this reporting period. But before I do, I hope you’ll allow me to explain why Democratic control of the Senate is so important.
I’ve recently had a front-row seat to revelation after revelation of former President Donald Trump’s anti-democratic obstruction. His former acting attorney general confirmed Trump tried to exert presidential power and pressure to overturn the 2020 election. The select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection is also investigating whether the Trump family and Republican members of Congress aided violent insurrectionists the day of the attack on our Capitol.
These details are chilling – but here’s what we need to remember: Because Democrats hold control in Congress, we are able to investigate and hold even the most powerful accountable for their wrongdoing. If Republicans were still in control, we know they would simply defend the former president and sweep his attacks on our democracy under the rug. If we allow the GOP to retake the Senate, they will only embolden the streaks of authoritarianism that have infested their party.
Passing bold legislation, securing justice and accountability, protecting our democracy, and improving the lives of everyday people – it all hinges on protecting and expanding a very fragile Democratic control of the Senate. Here in Connecticut, the political ground is already shifting: Republicans flipped a state Senate seat, and national Republicans are targeting our U.S. Senate seat to get Mitch McConnell back in power.
Thank you,
Dick
