Debt Limit Warning
Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen on Tuesday told Congress that the United States will run out of flexibility to avoid breaching the debt limit on Oct. 18, setting a new deadline for lawmakers. Hours after her warning, a Senate effort to suspend the debt ceiling failed, as The Washington Post reports.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told Congress that the Treasury would be unable to pay all the government’s bills if lawmakers don’t raise the federal borrowing limit by Oct. 18. The U.S. faces an estimated $20 billion in Social Security payments on Oct. 20 along with around $6 billion in individual tax refunds.
