Friend,

According to last year’s child mortality report, the number of children dying before the age of 5 has hit a record low. Over the past 30 years, UNICEF has helped cut the world’s child mortality rate by almost 60 percent, but the consequences of the pandemic are threatening to reverse our progress. We must take action before the situation gets worse -- will you join us?

As the Chief of Nutrition for UNICEF Mexico, I know too well what an undernourished child looks like and what it means for their survival. There’s a greater risk of dying from common infections, increased frequency and severity of such infections and weakening of the immune system. And the pandemic has made matters worse: disrupting food systems, increasing food insecurity and limiting the delivery of essential services for the children most in need.

Here’s the good news: deaths from malnutrition can be prevented. You can help make that possible by calling on Congress to implement policies that extend support for children.

I work directly with the people most affected by severe malnutrition and the governments creating the laws that regulate the food we eat. We respond to malnutrition at all stages -- from early prevention, to ensuring nutritious food is accessible and even helping bring children suffering from severe acute malnutrition back to health with Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF). This is what you help make possible when you sign your name today.

Today, the odds are stacked against children, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Use your voice to ask Congress to prioritize and protect every child.
